Advancing the Future of MRO: Recap of DCMC Event at Aviolanda

On Wednesday, May 29th, the Development Center for Maintenance of Composites (DCMC), in collaboration with Aviolanda Aerospace, hosted the event “Digitizing Engineering in MRO.” This event was a showcase of cutting-edge techniques and innovations in composite maintenance and repair with an emphasis on digitization, drawing industry leaders and experts to discuss and demonstrate the future of Aerospace Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul. Below you will find some highlights of the event.

The Power of Digital Twinning

One of the highlights was the presentation by the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) on the power of Digital Twinning in maintenance. This technology creates a virtual replica of physical assets, enabling predictive maintenance and real-time monitoring. KLM’s Blue Labs demonstrated several use cases of Digital Twinning in airline operations, showcasing its potential to revolutionize efficiency and reliability in the aviation industry.

Insights from Delft University of Technology

TU Delft’s Aerospace Engineering department presented their findings on the Perception of Inspection within the context of digitizing MRO processes. Their research emphasized improvements in accuracy, efficiency, and comprehensiveness, making a compelling case for the integration of advanced digital inspection techniques in regular maintenance routines.

Data Integrity

The 980 SQUADRON of the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) provided an intriguing perspective on data integrity. Their examples underscored the importance of understanding and correctly interpreting digital data, especially when dealing with state-of-the-art weapon systems. The examples highlighted the significant impact of data accuracy on decision-making processes.

Collaboration through Digitization

Fokker Services Group stressed the importance of collaboration across all levels of MRO organizations. They showcased the introduction and use of Microsoft’s Hololens in aircraft repair and modification projects, highlighting how augmented reality can enhance the interaction between engineers and mechanics, leading to more efficient job execution.

Innovations in Composite Repair

GMI AERO presented their latest innovation, the ANITA Hot Bonder for composite repair. This technology not only facilitates the aircraft repair process but also records data and allows for remote control, demonstrating the seamless integration of digital solutions in composite maintenance.
